If you’ve been meaning to use your massage benefits before year-end, November is a good time to open your benefits app and see what’s left. Start with two details: the last date you can attend an appointment in your current benefit period and the amount your plan may reimburse for that visit.

Those answers give you time to find an appointment that suits your schedule and know what you’ll pay before you book. Here’s what to check if you’re considering a massage with Alberta Allard, RMT, at Joy & Vitality Centre in Calgary.

Check when your massage benefits reset

Open the massage therapy section of your insurer’s app or benefits booklet and look for the dates of your current benefit period. If the app only shows a balance, ask your insurer when the period ends and whether any unused amount carries forward.

Write down two dates: the last eligible date for the appointment and the deadline to submit the claim. These can be different. If your appointment is close to the end of the period, ask which period the insurer will apply it to.

Find out how much the plan may pay for one visit

A remaining annual balance tells you how much is left under that limit. To estimate reimbursement for one appointment, ask about the percentage covered, any maximum per visit and whether massage shares a limit with other services. Ask whether a deductible or an insurer’s fee limit applies, too.

For example, if a plan reimburses 80% of an eligible $135 charge, the calculation comes to $108 before any deductible or other limits. That’s an example. Your insurer can explain how your own plan would handle the charge.

Confirm the therapist and claim requirements

Give your insurer the therapist’s name, Alberta Allard, Registered Massage Therapist, and ask whether she meets your plan’s provider requirements. Ask whether your plan requires a referral or prescription, and whether that document needs to be dated before your visit.

Before the appointment, ask us how payment and receipts are handled for your insurer. If you’ll submit the claim yourself, check what the insurer needs on the receipt. It’s easier to ask in advance if your plan requires a provider number or other specific details.

Joy & Vitality Centre does not accept Sun Life for massage therapy. For other plans, confirm your eligibility and reimbursement with your insurer before booking.

Save these questions for your insurer

  • When does my current massage benefit period end, and when is the claim due?
  • How much coverage do I have left, and what could my plan reimburse for a $135 visit?
  • Is Alberta Allard, RMT, an eligible provider under my plan?
  • Do I need a referral, and what information must be on my receipt?
